Berlin Climate & Security Conference 2022

On 18 October 2022, my colleague and I hosted a closed roundtable on “The Triple Opportunity: Leveraging the Security Sector for People, Planet and Peace.” Policy makers, researchers and practitioners from around the world joined the session to share their thoughts on challenges and opportunities associated with security sector involvement in environmental protection and disaster risk reduction. The group also discussed areas for further exploration, including the need to focus on livelihoods along with law enforcement, common obstacles to effective enforcement of environmental legislation, and how communities can themselves be empowered as security actors in the face of rapidly accelerating climate change and environmental degradation. The outcomes document from the session is available here
